Indo-NZ Relations and Indophobic Graffiti

KR Bolton

A 61-year-old man has been arrested for painting Indophobic graffiti outside a school and in a public toilet in Auckland.i His motives are presently unknown, so nothing should be assumed, despite the kneejerk reaction of lobbyists, journalists, and police, the latter having become politicized.ii

Conveniently- or otherwise – the graffiti followed quickly on a banner display by a new youth group, Remigration NZ,iii outside the Mahatma Ghandi Centre in Mt. Eden just a week previously.iv thereby allowing legitimate concerns to be undermined.

With over 290,000 Indians in New Zealand comprising the “third largest ethnic group,” overtaking Chinese who number around 280,000, there are questions on how such demographic shifts might reposition New Zealand geopolitically, economically and in other ways. Even the Labour Party leader raised an issue about work visas in regard to the FTA.

Precisely a year ago, with the announcement of an FTA with India, I posted at The European New Zealander commentary on how New Zealand stands in relation to India and China, pointing out the deep rivalry that exists between them, behind the façade of BRICS. I wrote:

“As for New Zealand’s newly developing relationship with India, as with Russia, India is a bulwark against Chinese expansionism, which remains a primary concern for the Indo-Pacific. India, moreover, is not part of Mongol “Asia.” Its heritage is within the context of the “Indo-European,” as the term itself should make obvious, but which is nonetheless forgotten or ignored by those who can only see the spectre of “dark faces.” In particular, the leadership strata remain closer to Europeans than to ‘Asians.’v

I have been advocating an alliance with India since 2013, when my book Geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific: Emerging Conflicts, New Alliances, was published. My position on the need for close relations with India remains. Unfortunately, tying migration to such agreements is an inherent factor with “free trade,” given the nature of the international financial and economic system. Such money-driven relationships, which do not take account of differences as well as commonalities, are going to result in animosities rather than friendship. Attempting to smear and repress concerns such as those expressed by Remigration NZ et al, as “race hate” is a red-herring. There is no reason for example why an economic alliance with India should include what the U.N. calls “replacement migration,” but ridiculed as a “far right conspiracy theory” when the same policy is referred to as the “great replacement.”

India under its present regime should readily understand a reluctance to hitch an economic alliance with migration.

India Rejects Globalism

Indeed, one might look in askance at the reaction of local Indian lobbyists who condemn as “white racism” concerns from New Zealanders, when their own homeland is governed by ultra-nationalist Hindus of the BJP (and long may it reign) whose doctrine is far removed from the multiculturalist, liberal cosmopolitanism that these lobbyists promulgate for this country but apparently not for their own.

Only last year the Immigration and Foreigners Act passed by the BJP Government laid down eminently sensible laws for the defence of Hindustan. For example:

  • 7. Power to issue orders, directions or instructions.—(1) The Central Government may, by an order or direction or instruction, make provisions, either generally or with respect to all foreigners or with respect to any particular foreigner or any specified class or description of foreigner, for prohibiting, regulating or restricting the entry of foreigners into India or, their departure therefrom or their presence or continued presence therein.
  • 11. Visit to Protected or Restricted area or Prohibited places.—No foreigner shall enter or stay in Protected area or Restricted area or Prohibited place without a special permit or permission granted by such authority as may be specified by an order published in the Official Gazette in this behalf and subject to such conditions as specified therein.vi

In response the liberal globalists condemned India. Amnesty International for example, urged

“the Government of India to immediately repeal the Immigration and Foreigners Order, 2025. Any regulation of immigration must comply with the principles of legality, necessity, and proportionality, and include effective safeguards against abuse. The government must ensure that its laws and policies uphold the rights guaranteed under international human rights law and protect all individuals including foreigners, refugees, and human rights defenders from discrimination, censorship, and arbitrary detention.”

“The Government of India must reaffirm its commitment to human rights by ensuring transparency, accountability, and respect for freedom of movement and expression. The Immigration and Foreigners Order, 2025 represents a step away from these obligations and risks further eroding the country’s rule of law and rights-based fabric
.vii

The BJP legislation on migration could serve as an excellent blueprint for New Zealand.

When Indian lobbyists in New Zealand morally posture about multiculturalism and “white racism” it is pure cant, intended as a cynical ethno-political manoeuvre. One might however, suspect that our local Indian lobbyists are adherents of the Congress Party rather than the BJP, in which case the BJP needs to make the distinction clear and not become associated with facile liberalism.

Let us by all means establish an Indo-New Zealand alliance based on mutual interests, rather than as a replay of the Sino-NZ FTA.
